JANUARY

You can keep your home in top shape with simple tasks throughout the year. This month, be sure to:

1. Check your attic for birds, squirrels, raccoons, etc.

2. Pour 1 gallon of water down unused drains.

3. Clean the refrigerator drain pan.

4. Inspect your dishwasher for leaks.

5. Check the operation of your sump pump if you have one.

6. Have your air ducts cleaned.

7. Service your kitchen disposal by grinding several cups of ice cubes.

 

FEBRUARY

You can keep your home in top shape with simple tasks throughout the year. This month, be sure to:

1. Clean the vent duct for your clothes dryer. Fires created by clogged dryer vents are one of the most common causes of house fires.
2. Test your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms.
3. Make sure you and your family members know the location of all gas shut-off valves.
4. Examine your thermostat. Clean the heat sensor, contact points, and contacts; check your thermometer's accuracy and replace if necessary.
5. Pull out your refrigerator and clean behind the unit. Be sure to clean off the coils.
6. Replace or clean furnace filters.
7. Check your fire extinguishers. Refill or replace as needed.

 

MARCH

You can keep your home in top shape with simple tasks throughout the year. This month, be sure to:

1. Take a look at your lawn mower and give it a quick tune up. You'll be needing it soon enough!
2. Examine the exterior foundation grading/slope and ensure water moves away from your home. If water is collecting near the house, you'll want to get things fixed right away.
3. Inspect your roof's surface, flashing, eaves, and soffits; after winter weather, the roof could use a little attention.
4. Drain approximately 2 gallons from your water heater to eliminate sediment.
5. Examine, repair and replace caulk and grout around your tubs and showers.
6. Service your kitchen disposal by grinding several cups of ice cubes.
7. Check your window and door screens in anticipation of warmer weather.
8. Vacuum your bathroom vent covers.

 

 

APRIL

You can keep your home in top shape with simple tasks throughout the year. This month, be sure to:

1. Test your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms.
2. Drain approximately 2 gallons from your water heater to eliminate sediment.
3. Clean your clothes dryer vent duct.
4. Vacuum your bathroom vent covers.
5. Replace or clean your furnace filter.
6. Clean out your basement window wells.
7. Clean your refrigerator's condenser coils to keep it operating efficiently.
8. Clean around your air conditioning compressor and make sure that it gets sufficient air flow.

 

MAY

You can keep your home in top shape with simple tasks throughout the year. This month, be sure to:

1. Check all decks, patios, porches, stairs and railings for loose members and deterioration.
2. Check plumbing shut-off valves. Ensure that they turn off and on freely.
3. Service your kitchen disposal by grinding several cups of ice cubes.
4. Check vents, louvers and chimneys for bird nests and squirrels.
5. Check your sprinkler system for leaky valves and exposed lines.
6. Inspect your home's exterior siding for mildew. Scrub off as necessary.
7. Check your air conditioning unit and have it serviced before summer temperatures arrive.

 

JUNE

You can keep your home in top shape with simple tasks throughout the year. This month, be sure to:

1. Check foundation walls, floors, concrete and masonry for cracking, heaving or deterioration.
2. Check all wood surfaces for weathering and paint failures.
3. Trim back all tree limbs and other vegetation away from your roof.
4. Check for leaks under sinks and around toilets.
5. Replace or clean your furnace filter.
6. Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
7. Clean and lubricate garage door tracks.

 

JULY

You can keep your home in top shape with simple tasks throughout the year. This month, be sure to:

 

1. Trim back shrubbery around walls.
2. Trim tree limbs away from roof.
3. Remove any yard waste or debris as needed. Keep branches or other clippings around can attract insects.
4. Check your siding for damage, warping, or rot.
5. Check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
6. Check for damage, loose, or missing shingles on your roof.
7. Check your chimneys for deteriorating bricks and mortar.
8. Check window and door screens, replace or patch if needed.
9. Check driveway, walkway, and patios for cracks or deterioration and reseal or repair as necessary.

 

 

AUGUST

You can keep your home in top shape with simple tasks throughout the year. This month, be sure to:

 

1. Test your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detector. Replace batteries where necessary.
2. Drain approximately 2 gallons from your water heater to eliminate sediment.
3. Clean your clothes dryer vent duct.
4. Vacuum your bathroom vent covers.
5. Replace or clean your furnace filter.
6. Clean out any basement window wells.
7. Clean the condensation coils on your refrigerator to keep it running as efficiently as possible.
8. Clean around your air conditioning compressor and make sure it has adequate airflow.

 

 

SEPTEMBER

You can keep your home in top shape with simple tasks throughout the year. This month, be sure to:

 

1. Make sure your gutters stay clean and clog free. It's best to do this before leaves get wet from rain or snow.
2. Check caulking and weather strips around doors and windows.
3. Trim back tree branches that are too close to your house or other building structures.
4. Check for peeling paint and scrub any mildewed areas you find on your siding.
5. Service your kitchen disposal by grinding several cups of ice cubes.
6. Examine, repair and replace caulk and grout around your bathtubs and showers.
7. Pour one gallon of water down unused drains.
8. Check your fire extinguisher. Refill or replace as needed.

 

OCTOBER

You can keep your home in top shape with simple tasks throughout the year. This month, be sure to:

 

1. Replace or clean your furnace filter.
2. Clean filters for kitchen exhaust fans.

3. Pass a lit candle around doors and windows to check for drafts. Weather strip as necessary.
4. Check your driveway for cracks. Fill cracks and reseal as needed.
5. Cover your air conditioner and/or remove any window units.
6. Drain approximately 2 gallons from water heater to eliminate sediment.

 

November

You can keep your home in top shape with simple tasks throughout the year. This month, be sure to: 

1. Turn your ceiling fans to go the opposite direction to blow warm air down
2. Make sure any outdoor furniture is put away or properly covered, including your grill.
3. Pour 1 gallon of water down unused drains.

4. Winterize your pool and sprinkler system. Make sure outside faucets are drained and covered to prevent pipes cracking
5. Clean debris from gutters and ensure down spouts are free of obstruction.
6. Check for leaks under sinks and toilets.
7. Check for cracks in your foundation, brick or stucco.
8. Review emergency procedures and ensure all the members of your family know what to do in the event of a home fire.
9. Examine your chimney. Clean flue; repair any cracks in flue or any loose or crumbling mortar.

 

 

DECEMBER

You can keep your home in top shape with simple tasks throughout the year. This month, be sure to:

 

1. Check on supplies around the home that could will be helpful if there's a weather related power outage or other emergency. Batteries, non perishable food items, and blankets should be available.
2. Replace the filter on your furnace to keep it operating as efficiently as possible.
3. Clean faucet aerators and shower heads.
4. Reseal grout on counters, walls, and floors to prevent staining.
5. Drain approximately 2 gallons from water heater to eliminate sediment.
6. Make sure any decorative lights you put up for the holidays are working properly before hanging them. Anything with a frayed or damaged cord should be discarded.
